It was that time of year again! Lilli, my daughter, gets a new dress for her birthday. Past 3 years, she has been the designer for her dress. It’s our little thing we do now. I am excited to see how our tradition changes overtime. You can see past dresses I have documented here: 1st and 2nd birthday dresses and 4th birthday dress.

This year, our little designer picked out this gorgeous, what she calls, galaxy print. It’s more northern lights than galaxy – but you won’t find me correcting her.

Pattern

The pattern Lilli picked is an oldie – I used the same pattern as birthday dress 1 and 2. She wore birthday dress #2 until she was 5 years old, at which point I made it a skirt. But she missed having the dress and wanted another one. Unfortunately, for you all, it’s from a retired pattern designer so unavailable for purchase.

Fabric

What I can tell you is that this fabric is amazing! So soft and not too thin. I love the print and the colors. The fabric washes well. And lends to great twirling, this little girl’s requirement of a good dress. She will often ask me to watch her as she twirls around.

I wanted to give it a contrasting waistband and ruffle, so asked Lilli what to pair the Minerva fabric with – she picked out a navy blue cotton with little flowers all over. It was given to me by my friend’s mother who had lots of fabrics from when she sewed. Yay for fabric gifts! Using a lilac colored satin ribbon between the two fabrics, helped tie it all in.

Side note, look at that amazing cake, my sister made!!

Picture of a birthday cake, white frosting with pink, orange, yellow, and red balloons; and a purple number 6 made from frosting. Cake is atop a marble board with the accent of the fabric used for the birthday dress.

Overall, I’m in love with this dress. And most importantly, Lilli is also in love with it. It’s her new favorite right now.

What traditions do you have for birthdays?
