Birthday dresses are my thing. And this birthday dress for my friend’s daughter was a fun make. Keep reading for all the details.
Pattern
Since the recipient is two years younger, I usually can get by with previously traced patterns. For this one, I used the same pattern as this dress I made for Lilli.
Fabric
I used this fun pear fabric, and paired it with an almost lime green chiffon. Because the chiffon was transparent, I used the pear fabric as an underlining for the bodice. As with any underlining I do, I hand baste the pieces together before serging all the edges. Then I can treat it as one piece, no shifting.
Details
Piping – I created a faux piping by folding over the facing and leaving some of it peeking out
Ties – And because I’m usually guessing sizes – I added some ties to the dress.
Pockets – If you have been following me, you know my love for pockets. I started making them so that they are anchored to the waist seam to keep them anchored. No more twisted pockets.
Free-Motion Embroidery
I usually have a plan laid out when I do free-motion embroidery. But this time, I just made it up as I went. I knew I wanted a row of flowers and leaves but that was all I had before sitting down on the sewing machine. Lilli had come to see what I was making and she started telling me what kind of flower to make next. It was fun to just create! For clothes, I add Sulky Tender Touch to keep the embroidery from scratching and the threads safe from pulls.
